Marble Family Bathroom

A dated family bathroom in Hammersmith, stripped back and rebuilt in marble. The old sanitaryware, tiling and fittings came out, the plumbing was altered to suit the new layout, and the wet areas were prepared and waterproofed before a tile went up. The marble was then set out so the veining runs balanced across the walls and floor, which is the slow part of a room like this: every cut around a corner, an outlet or a piece of sanitaryware has to land where the pattern still reads. New bath, shower, basin and toilet followed, with lighting, accessories, sealing and a freshly decorated ceiling. The whole room was delivered in ten days, and it is a fair example of the bathroom renovations we carry out across Hammersmith and West London.

How it was done

The full transformation, stage by stage

Every photo below is from this job, in the order the work happened. Tap any one to see it full size.

  1. Stage 1: The starting point

The customer wanted an elegant but practical family bathroom: comfortable for everyday use, with a luxurious feel from marble finishes, modern sanitaryware and carefully coordinated fixtures.

The old bathroom, dark and dated
The old tiled bath surround and its patterned border
  2. Stage 2: Strip-out

Sanitaryware, tiles and fittings out, the old floor up, and the walls taken back ready for the new layout.

Old suite still in as the chequerboard floor comes up
Bath out and the wall stripped back
  3. Stage 3: Waterproofing, plumbing and marble

The plumbing was altered for the new layout and the wet areas prepared and waterproofed before a tile went up. Then the marble, set out so the veining runs balanced across the walls and floor, on levelling clips so every joint sits flush.

Marble going up on levelling clips, veining set out
Bath back in, walls tiled and the floor down
  4. Stage 4: The finished bathroom

New bath, shower, basin and toilet, lighting and accessories, grouting and sealing, and a freshly decorated ceiling. Ten days from the first day on site to handover.

The part you don't see

Marble that reads as one piece

The hard part was setting out and cutting the marble so the veining looked balanced and consistent across the walls and floor. Every cut around a corner, a plumbing outlet or a piece of sanitaryware had to land where the pattern still reads. Waterproofing, plumbing, tiling and fitting also had to be sequenced tightly to finish the whole room in ten days without compromising the quality of the finish.

What went in

  • Marble wall and floor finishes
  • Coordinated marble veining and precise cutting
  • Full waterproofing of the wet areas
  • New bath, shower, basin and toilet
  • Practical family layout
  • New lighting and accessories
